Markus Herrmann Chen (陈瑞华)

Managing Director

Markus, a Swiss-Chinese, is an experienced advisor to European corporate and public sector clients on the Chinese market and an expert in China’s economic, trade and S&T policies, political cooperation and government affairs strategies. Prior to CMG, Markus worked as Director with Berlin-based Sinolytics LLC, Government Affairs Director with Bayer MaterialScience in China and as Management Consultant with Boston Consulting Group in its Shanghai, Hong Kong and Zurich offices. Markus is a Strategic Advisor Europe to Caixin Global, a Board member with the Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy (Foraus) and a Foundation Board member with the Stein am Rhein Symposium (stars). He is further engaged in advisory boards with CEIBS Zurich, the Swiss-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) and the UZH AOI.

 

Markus holds a B.A. and M.A. in Law from the Universities of Geneva, Bern and Fribourg, participated in a Chinese language certificate program at the Peking University and holds a CAS from ETHZ in public policy and a CAS from the University of Zurich in applied ethics.

Michael Settelen (孙明夏)

Senior Consultant

Michael is an expert in China’s economy and economic policies with extensive working experience at the nexus of policy and business including at the Economic Section of the Swiss Embassy in Beijing, the EU Chamber of Commerce (EUCCC), a Beijing-based boutique consultancy specialized in regional development and market entry projects and as academic lecturer at the ZHAW School of Management and Law teaching courses on China’s economy. Prior to CMG, Michael worked as an economic editor for Asia at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) with a special focus on analyzing and commenting on economic, technology and political developments in the Chinese market. 

 

Michael holds a B.A. in Business Administration from ZHAW School of Management and Law and a dual degree-M.A. in Chinese-European Economics and Business Studies from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu.

Hailin Wang (王海林)

Senior Consultant

Hailin Wang, Consultant, has extensive experience researching and analyzing industrial policy and corporate performance, especially in the areas of energy policy, regulatory compliance including cybersecurity and social credit system, sustainability and environmental protection. Prior to CMG, he worked at Greenpeace East Asia assessing companies’ environmental performance and multiple industrial policies as well as at Sinolytics on a variety of China topics.

Hailin holds a B.A. in Economics from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu, a M.A. in Political, Legal, and Economic Philosophy from the University of Bern in Switzerland and has passed the CFA level I.

Helen Tang (唐昱)

Senior Analyst

Helen is a public policy expert specializing in China’s social and health policies as well as industrial policies with focus on the automotive sector. She has further worked on China’s fast evolving cyber security framework analyzing the regulatory impact on foreign companies. Prior to CMG, Helen has worked in a boutique consultancy in Beijing serving the industrial sector as well as interned with both the UN in New York and the ILO in Geneva.

 

Helen holds a BSc. in Economics and Finance from Tsinghua University, School of Economics and Management (SEM) and a MSc. in Science in Social Policy at the School of Policy and Practice at the University of Pennsylvania.

Nicolas Winkler (温世同)

Analyst

 

Nicolas is a political scientist with Sinology background specializing in China’s social and governance policies with a special focus on population control measures as well as challenges arising from demographic transition. In his research, he has focused on the conceptualization of modernization narratives in contemporary China, as well as the role ordinary citizens are given in this process.


Nicolas holds a B.A. in Political Science and Sinology from the University of Zurich and an MPhil in Modern Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford. Before and during his studies, Nicolas obtained a one-year Chinese language certificate from Heilongjiang University in Harbin, China, as well as spent extensive periods of time in Chinese language environments both in Tianjin and Taipei.

Alex Zhou (周正)

Analyst

Alex is a finance and investment specialist with experience working with in China’s technology and FinTech sectors. In his earlier roles, he conducted market and company research to evaluate investment opportunities in banking, ICT, enterprise services and Fintech. Prior to CMG, Alex worked for the Postal Savings Bank of China (HQ), the International Data Corporation (Beijing) as well as Liquidity Capital Co., Ltd., a tech-investor.

Alex is pursuing an MAS in European and Chinese Business Management at the University of Zurich. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Studies with a specialization in International Politics and Economics from the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
